My Journey Through Watercolor: Art as a Voice for Freedom
Share
Beginnings of My Artistic Journey
My watercolor journey began in 2020 during a period of reflection and self-discovery. Growing up in Iraq, where LGBTQ+ voices are often silenced, I found in painting a safe and powerful way to express my identity and share untold stories. From the first brushstrokes, I realized my art could be more than personal expression—it could be a voice for those historically oppressed and marginalized.
Giving Voice to the Silenced
Very few artists from the Middle East openly explore LGBTQ+ experiences. I am one of the rare voices, shining light on stories often hidden due to persecution, violence, or cultural taboos. My watercolor paintings capture resilience, freedom, and the courage to exist authentically despite danger.
Evolution Through My Collections
Over the years, my artistic journey has been marked by distinct collections, each reflecting growth, experimentation, and advocacy:
Gallery 2020 – The Beginning
This collection marked my first exploration with watercolor. Focused on personal identity and self-expression, it laid the foundation for my voice as an artist.
Gallery 2021 – Freedom in Color
Here, I began incorporating bold narratives highlighting LGBTQ+ stories from the Middle East. Color became a symbol of liberation and courage.
Gallery 2022 – Light & Shadow
Exploring contrasts, this series reflects the struggles and triumphs of marginalized communities. Light symbolizes hope, shadow represents the dangers faced by queer individuals.
Gallery 2023 – City Narratives
Urban landscapes meet personal stories. This collection shows queer Middle Eastern life within modern cityscapes, emphasizing identity in context and place.
Gallery 2024 – New Horizons
A forward-looking series exploring freedom, self-acceptance, and breaking barriers. Watercolor techniques became more dynamic, reflecting optimism and growth.
Gallery 2025 – The Expression Series
My latest work highlights expressive forms and emotions, blending Pop Art influences with advocacy for Middle Eastern LGBTQ+ voices. It is the culmination of my journey so far.
Art as Advocacy
Every painting is both a story and a statement. Through my work, I challenge historical silences, educate audiences, and celebrate the resilience of LGBTQ+ Middle Eastern individuals. Watercolor becomes a bridge between cultures, history, and freedom of expression.
