About the Artist
Born in Iraq and raised in Dubai, Zak Mohammed moved to New York City in 2018 seeking freedom and creative expression. With a background in engineering, Zak spent two decades in a successful but unfulfilling career before rediscovering his true passion for art during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Working exclusively with the six colors of the LGBTQ+ flag, Zak creates watercolor paintings that explore identity, resilience, and self‑expression. His work reflects both personal history and the universal search for belonging.
Artistic Statement
My art is a visual diary of liberation. Each figure I paint carries stories of courage, vulnerability, and pride. Using only the colors of the LGBTQ+ flag is both a creative constraint and a powerful symbol of visibility, unity, and survival. Through watercolor, I aim to transform lived experiences into bold, joyful narratives.
